Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has recently participated in the Ground Probe 2024 Papua New Guinea User Conference held in Port Moresby’s Hilton Hotel.

The conference hosted by Orica Geosolutions had attendees from Papua New Guinea Resource Industry including OTML, Harmony, Barrick Gold Corporation, Santos, Newmont, and Earth Sciences students from the University of Papua New Guinea from the 5th – 6th November.

OTML representatives include Engineers from the Mine Geotechnical Team and Roads and Engineering Departments, and six GDS Trainees selected from several technical fields to broaden their knowledge in mining technology applications that manage safety in operating sites.

The conference involved sharing and discussion of geotechnical risks faced by Papua New Guinean mines, use of appropriate risk management tools to mitigate and minimize geotechnical risks using technological solutions manufactured by Orica Geosolutions.

OTML’s Manager Mine Technical Services James Bu gave his keynote speech emphasizing the importance of geotechnical engineers’ roles and the constant need to utilize technologies to maintain efficiency, safety, regulatory compliance, and operational sustainability across mining operations.

“Integration of different technology and software helps engineers to understand the failure mechanisms and aids to make appropriate risk management decisions,” said Mr Bu.

He urged geotechnical engineers to maintain their commitment to zero fatalities across all mines and asserted PNG’s step in technological solutions to uphold safe mining operations.

Orica Geosolutions Vice President for Australasia Operational Excellence Clifford Walsh acknowledged the attendees for their participation and future business.

“It’s a really important job that you all are doing. Orica will do its best to serve you by providing the best technological solutions for open pit and underground mining, tailings dam, and civil infrastructure among others,” said Mr Walsh.

OTML’s Superintendent Geotechnical Engineering Tata Peryoga thanked the OTML Management’s continuous commitment to enhancing and equipping the geotechnical team to be competent in the field.

“It’s good to learn from the provider of the equipment we use and the new technologies that they are working on. It’s also good to learn from other operations’ challenges and geotechnical issues they face so that we all can improve on,” said Tata.

OTML is committed to people development and ensuring employees participate in events like this to broaden their horizons, knowledge and skills to perform exceptionally at work.  The Company also provides continuous training support to its workforce in various areas of its operations while integrating technology into its processes and systems for better productivity.
